Oklahoma Silver Alerts drop sharply in 2011
According to a recent article in the Daily Oklahoman, Silver Alerts in Oklahoma declined significantly in 2011 over the year before.
Gene Thaxton, director of the Oklahoma Law Enforcement Telecommunications System, said only 64 Silver Alerts have been issued in the state through Thursday.
In 2010, the first year the system was officially part of Oklahoma law enforcement’s arsenal and the first year that comprehensive records were kept, Thaxton said 127 alerts were issued by various police departments and sheriff’s offices across the state.
Thaxton was hard-pressed to offer an explanation for the decrease, noting that things such as Silver Alerts are relatively random in nature.
“I don’t have a reason for that other than that there were fewer reported this year,” Thaxton said.
“I think law enforcement understands it now, as well as the general public. I think everybody in the state has a pretty good idea what it is now.”
